Irit Amiel was born in Poland in 1931 as Irena Librowicz.<\/p>\n
She survived the Second World War having escaped from the Cz\u0119stochowa ghetto and living under\u00a0false Aryan papers. Via illegal routes and displaced persons camps in Germany, Italy and Cyprus she\u00a0reached Palestine in 1947. She has lived in Israel ever since, where she studied history and\u00a0literature. She works as a poet, writer and translator in two languages, Polish and Hebrew.<\/p>\n
Irit Amiel\u2019s debut volume of poetry\u00a0Egzamin z Zaglady<\/em>\u00a0had three editions in Hebrew (1994, 1995,\u00a01998) and was published twice in Polish (1994, 1998). The subsequent two collections of poems were\u00a0also printed in Poland:\u00a0Nie zd\u0105\u017cy\u0142am<\/em>\u00a0(\u0141\u00f3d\u017a 1998) and\u00a0Wdycha\u0107 g\u0142\u0119boko<\/em>\u00a0(2002). This publication is an\u00a0enhanced, bilingual edition of the latter.<\/p>\n Her volume of short stories\u00a0Osmaleni<\/em>\u00a0(Warszawa 1999) received widespread praise and was\u00a0nominated in Poland for the prestigious Nike Prize. Her collection of short stories\u00a0Podw\u00f3jny\u00a0krajobraz<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0was published in 2009 and was shown the same appreciation. It was translated into Italian a\u00a0year later. The book\u00a0Osmaleni<\/em>\u00a0was translated by the author into Hebrew, then published in Hungarian,\u00a0English, French and German.<\/p>\n Irit Amiel has translated the writing of M. and M. Maria\u0144scy (1987), Mieczys\u0142aw Frenkel (1988), poems\u00a0of Lea Rozenzweig (1993) and \u00a0Abramek Koplowicz (1995) into Hebrew. Her translations of Polish\u00a0works by Leo Lipski, Marek H\u0142asko, Henryk Grynberg and Hanna Krall, as well as Wis\u0142awa\u00a0Szymborska\u2019s poems and a number of theatre plays have been published in Israel. She has prepared\u00a0a Polish anthology of key contemporary Hebrew poets. She also translated into Polish one of the most\u00a0significant \u00a0plays by Hanoch Lewin,\u00a0Requiem<\/em>, which was published in the volume: Hanoch Lewin,\u00a0Ja i\u00a0Ty i Nast\u0119pna Wojna<\/em>.
